Agility Just for Kicks will introduce your dog to the obstacles found on your basic agility course in a safe and controlled way that doesn’t involve forcing your dog to do anything. Dogs that figure things out for themselves and receive high rates of reinforcement will learn to love performing behaviors and working for you!
Obstacles that will be taught include jumps, A-frame, dog-walk, tire jump, broad jump, wobble boards, tunnels, and the pause table.
This class is not only for beginners but will also be tailored to suit the interests of dogs who have learned the obstacles or who may have even competed in Agility before. No matter where you’re starting, every class and every course will provide you with a challenge specific to you and your dog! This class is ongoing and every week we will tackle something new. This class is purely for the fun, with a little self-discipline thrown in.

Teach Your Dog To Shake Hands

Is there any dog owner out there who has not thought about teaching your dog to shake hands with you and others? Probably you already have, and this is such a simple trick for any breed of dog to learn it is a great starting point for further training. Those who are first time dog owners may not be aware of how easy teaching your dog to shake hands really is, so below are the simple steps for teaching Max how to shake hands with you and others.

When you begin, you need to make a couple of decisions before starting the training. One is which paw you want the dog to learn to shake with. Most people go with the dog learning to shake with his or her right paw as the vast majority of humans are right handed. Next you will need to pick the one word command for the dog to learn. As expected most people use “shake” as their command word but another option is “paw” and “hand” for those who like things different.

Begin by having the puppy or adult dog sit in front of you and reach down lifting the paw of choice. A word of caution is due here: dogs do not like their feet/paws messed with, so when you lift the paw be gentle, and in a soothing, gentle voice give the command word while shaking the dog’s paw up and down slightly.
With practice and repetition the dog will quickly learn what the command word means and the behavior you expect. To get things off to a fast start you always want to praise the dog and slip him a tasty treat as he is learning this trick.

Once you have your dog shaking hands with the right foot you can move on to teaching him to use his left paw by using the same training method but change the command word to “left paw shake” or something similar.

It is very normal for a dog who has learned to shake hands with people to expect most strangers he meets to shake his paw. Dogs are very intelligent and yearn to please their owners, as well as friends of the family, so he or she may surprise someone you know when they enter your home and the dog comes up to them and offers his paw.

As you can see teaching your dog to shake hands is quite easy and a great starting point for further trick training.

Canine Joint Health: 5 Simple Ways to Ease Pain

Canine Joint Health: 5 Simple Ways to Ease Pain

dogjoints
Does your pooch suffer from joint pain? Perhaps, arthritis has set in? If you have visited your vet and confirmed that your dog is actually suffering from such a medical condition, then maybe it’s about time for you to jump in and help your dog out. Or, if you have a breed of pup that’s susceptible, these 5 easy ways to ease his joint pain can also help to prevent it!
Alleviating your Dog’s Joint Problem
Most vets advise dogs with joint pain to let their dogs take a rest combined with adequate diet and possible medications. However, if their pooch’s joint pain still persists even after a long period of time, owners need to start taking necessary actions. Below are some of the great things you can do to give Fido that much needed comfort. Spare your pooch from any more pain as you give him adequate joint lubrication and flexibility.
· Feeding your dog right. Providing your pooch with a diet rich in glucosamine is important to keep his joint health in good condition. Lots of specialty dog foods in many pet stores have glucosamine in them; usually seen with a “joint health formula” label. Although this can be quite pricy, it nonetheless can save you from a cumbersome vet bill along the way.
· Providing Fido exercise. However counter-intuitive it may sound, working a sore joint can actually make your dog’s condition better since regular physical activities can keep his affected joints lubricated. Of course, we are not talking about a rigorous exercise here. A nice walk in a dog park or an easy jog around your neighborhood will suffice. Besides, exercise will also keep his body weight down.
· Giving occasional massage. You can also relieve lots of tension pain in Fido’s joints by applying light pressure on the muscles around his joints. Remember to massage him around, never on, the aching joint itself. Doing this twice a day for one or two minutes will surely make a big difference on your pooch’s condition.
· Trying some acupressure. Squeezing Fido’s achilles heel, the tendon right above your dog’s paw, by the ankle, with the use of your thumb and middle finger will also help in easing the pain your dog is suffering from. Try doing this for half or one hour and your pooch will certainly bliss out.
· Embracing natural remedies. If you can, avoid administering potentially harmful medication. Instead, use various natural supplements by looking for a homeopathic solution that will alleviate Fido’s joint pain as you lubricate his affected junctions, promote flexibility, and enhance your pooch’s own restorative process.

pancreatitis

Pancreatitis in Dogs

Pancreatitis in dogs generally is a painful, serious canine disease that can crop up all of a sudden. Although the exact cause of this condition remains unknown, it appears to be most common in middle-aged pooches, probably more in females as compared to males, which are overweight and usually follows a high-fat diet.

For some dogs, an attack can occur rapidly as a result of eating table scraps or very fatty foods. Veterinarians often report increased cases of acute pancreatitis around the holidays, when people unknowingly feed their dog special treats from the holiday meal, like turkey skin or sweets. However, not all cases are a result of poor diet, as genetics seems to also play a role in its development.

Understanding the Basics
· The pancreas. The pancreas is a large, elongated gland in the body that is found between the upper small intestine, kidneys, liver, spleen, and stomach. One of the pancreas’ major functions is the secretion of digestive enzymes as well as other essential substances necessary for digestion. Pancreatitis occurs when there is a swelling and inflammation of the organ. The condition is linked to the activation of certain digestive enzymes that lead to the injury to the pancreas itself, and sometimes, even to its adjacent organs in the abdomen.

· The symptoms. Clinical signs of pancreatitis normally include vomiting, oftentimes profuse; lack of appetite or refusal to eat; lack of thirst or refusal to drink; weight loss; depression; weakness; lethargy; abdominal pain, usually severe and sudden; diarrhea; dehydration; and/or tucked up belly. Once the disease has progressed, the following indicators can be observed: abnormal stool consistency and color; fever; swollen abdomen; heart arrhythmias; difficulty breathing; shock; systemic infection, inflammation of the other organs that surround the pancreas; and/or internal hemorrhage. Since pancreatitis in dogs can be very serious, it requires immediate vet attention.

Treatment Options
Most cases of pancreatitis in dogs are treated by means of withholding the pet’s oral food and water, along with intravenous fluid in order to maintain the electrolyte balance and normal fluid in the dog’s body. Anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, anti-emetics, and pain killers may also be prescribed to manage the symptoms of the disease. If shock is present, other treatments may be provided. Sadly, pooches that show shock are often at risk of death, despite the aggressive forms of treatment.
When vomiting is no longer present, the patient can be given little amounts of fluids. If he can keep the liquids down, small amount of low protein, low fat diet may be offered. Some dogs with pancreatitis, however, may have to be hospitalized for several days before they can be sent back home.
Possible Long Term Problems
Although most dogs with pancreatitis may recover without any long-term effect, there are still some cases in which the dog may continue showing recurrent bouts of the condition, commonly referred to as chronic, relapsing pancreatitis. These dogs usually require a specific medical diet to minimize the recurrence rate. Nevertheless, if a substantial amount of pancreatic cells have been destroyed; inadequate digestive enzymes might be produced resulting in continuing digestive problems. Dogs experiencing this digestive difficulty may have to be medicated with each meal in order to prevent diarrhea and weight loss. In addition, since the pancreas is also the site of the production of insulin, if a great number of these cells is being destroyed, the patient may develop diabetes.
The very best way to prevent pancreatitis in your dog is to provide a healthy, low fat, balanced diet and plenty of regular exercise. Further, if you’re adopting a dog from a breeder, make sure that the other dogs in the breeding line have not developed this condition, as genetics do play a role.

There will be registration at 12:30 pm and a 2pm shotgun start. Dinner will follow.
Texas Husky Rescue was established in May 2009 to help save homeless, abused and neglected huskies and adopt them in to permanent and loving forever homes. TXHR is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization run entirely by volunteers with no paid staff or shelter. We rely on our network of foster families to give temporary homes to huskies until their permanent home is found. TXHR provides necessary vetting and medical care and we are a responsible animal rescue agency in that we spay/neuter every husky prior to adoption. We are proud to have saved over 600 huskies since our inception!

How can you help?
1. Become an official sponsor. Our sponsorship packages are attached for your review.
2. Donate an auction item or raffle prize – no item is too big or too small.
3. Register to play – and invite your family, friends and co-workers to play!
We hope you will join us by sponsoring, donating or playing in our tournament. You’ll have a fabulous time all while making a direct impact on the lives of huskies that desperately need it. All of us at TXHR thank you in advance for your consideration and support.

One of the skills we teach is the Snout-to-Tail ™ Assessment.
Read how this saved one pet’s life . . .
A pet owner who took our class loved her little dog because she did her homework assignment of the Snout-To-Tail ™ Assessment. Where you go from Snout-To-Tail ™ with deliberate intent and purpose creating a baseline of your pet’s health. Also, so that you know more of what is normal for your pet, so you can more quickly recognize what is not normal for your pet. She found mammary tumors growing on her dog. She took her to the vet, who confirmed the diagnosis. Luckily she caught it early enough that treatment was successful. However, the vet did tell her that if she had let that go just another five or six months, the outcome may not have been as good. This simple skill that can take only a few minutes added thousands of minutes to this pet’s life.
When I tell this story in the classroom, some people wonder how she didn’t notice the mammary tumors in the first place. The thing is that she never really put her hands on her dog, from Snout-To-Tail ™ , with deliberate intent and purpose, like we teach in the class. She said she would come home from work, make her dog dinner, have dinner herself, her dog would sit on her lap and she would pet it.

Support a good cause while having fun. Join us for the 4th annual race, benefiting DFW Lab Rescue. We are a non profit 501 (c) 3 organization which operates solely on private donations. Our average cost per dog is over $600, yet our adoption fee is only $275. We charge the same adoption fee for all our dogs, regardless of their past health. In order to make up for the difference between the actual cost of the dog and our adoption rate, we rely on special events/fundraisers like this to help supplement the costs.
