The 20th Annual Sporting Chance Golf Tournament is an annual non-profit fund raising event benefiting the DFW Labrador Retriever (DFWLRR) organization. While this tournament is not the only fund raising opportunity for this group, this is our most publicized effort and has, historically, been a very successful public relations tool. Not to mention the fun we all have on the course! By participating in the 20th Annual Sporting Chance Golf Tournament, you are helping the DFW Lab Rescue organization in their efforts to save the lives of dogs that deserve a “Sporting Chance.”

Does your dog jump on all your friends and visitors? And all over you when you get home from work? Does it frustrate you that you can’t have a simple conversation with someone you meet on a walk because your dog is out of control? Then this class is for you!

In this class we will work on self-control and obedience exercises to help your dog learn to be calm and relaxed when meeting friends, visitors, and strangers, whether when out on a walk or when people come over to visit. We’ll also help your dog learn to focus on you and pay attention to you in these types of situations.

You’ll be amazed at your dog’s transformation by the end of this class.

Note: This group class will have a unique format. You’ll start with a half-hour private lesson with the instructor, and then continue over the following weeks with four hour long group class sessions.

Pre-requisites: No previous training required. This class is not appropriate for dogs with aggression issues / extreme reactivity issues.

Cost for class: $150

“Beth’s CPR & First Aid Seminar is, without question, the most comprehensive and enjoyable pet care class I’ve ever taken. She uses her own experience as a veterinary technician and dog care facility manger to create meaningful scenarios and experiences that you can apply to your own pets. Beth ensures that every student understands each technique by allowing practice on both stuffed and demonstrations with live dogs, which makes the instruction more memorable. The 8 hour class simply flew by! It was a great value and I will be taking it every year from now on.”

One of the skills we teach is the Snout-to-Tail ™ Assessment.

Read how this saved one pet’s life . . .

A pet owner who took our class loved her little dog because she did her homework assignment of the Snout-To-Tail ™ Assessment. Where you go from Snout-To-Tail ™ with deliberate intent and purpose creating a baseline of your pet’s health. Also, so that you know more of what is normal for your pet, so you can more quickly recognize what is not normal for your pet. She found mammary tumors growing on her dog. She took her to the vet, who confirmed the diagnosis. Luckily she caught it early enough that treatment was successful. However, the vet did tell her that if she had let that go just another five or six months, the outcome may not have been as good. This simple skill that can take only a few minutes added thousands of minutes to this pet’s life.

When I tell this story in the classroom, some people wonder how she didn’t notice the mammary tumors in the first place. The thing is that she never really put her hands on her dog, from Snout-To-Tail ™ , with deliberate intent and purpose, like we teach in the class. She said she would come home from work, make her dog dinner, have dinner herself, her dog would sit on her lap and she would pet it.

HUMANE SOCIETY OF FLOWER MOUND PLANS ACTIVITIES FOR NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY
The Humane Society of Flower Mound (HSFM) will participate in North Texas Giving Day on Thursday, September 18, 2014. Sponsored by the Communities Foundation of Texas, this yearly one-day event raises much-needed funds for charities across north Texas. Donations of $25 and above will be amplified by $2 million in bonus funds and prizes awarded to participating charities.
In just five years, North Texas Giving Day has pumped more than $60 million into the North Texas community. In 2013, more than 75,000 gifts totaling $25.2 million, benefiting more than 1,350 nonprofits.
HSFM has several special events planned for the day. Starting at 7am, “Ambassadogs” will visit local businesses to thank them for their support of HSFM throughout the year and to raise awareness of the amazing animals available for adoption from local shelters. Ambassadogs and volunteers will greet and take photographs with staff and customers at each location, and post them to social media with the hashtag #NTXGivingDay to encourage people to donate online that day.  The Ambassadogs include:
Pendleberry, a Basset/Aussie mix who was treated for parvo
The Dude, a fluffy English Mastiff who was abandoned at a shelter
Blossom, a Jack Russell/Whippet mix who was found with her leg wrapped in plastic and had to have it amputated
Lucy, a Chow mix who departs to New York through our Love on Wheels program on September 23
Charities will receive live donation tally updates throughout the day, and for each $1000 raised for HSFM, logo t-shirts will be given to whatever lucky supporter is petting the Ambassadog at that time. An anonymous donor will match up to $10,000 that day in support of HSFM’s Love on Wheels program, which takes dogs from local shelters and sends them to a partner shelter in New York to be adopted. HSFM has set a goal of $10,000 in donations for North Texas Giving Day. Supporters can also help by “retweeting” posts that day on Twitter at @HSFMTweets.

From 5-8pm, HSFM will be at Agave Azul in Flower Mound for a “yappy hour” on the patio to celebrate and raise last-minute donations. Several of the Ambassadogs are expected to attend, and all leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome.

For more information, including pictures of the Ambassadogs and the schedule of visits, please visit www.hsfm.org or call 972-691-7387.
