Two Fun and Easy Tricks to Teach Your Dog!

Two Fun and Easy Tricks to Teach Your Dog!

dogtricks
Teaching tricks is a great way to bond with your dog. There are other benefits as well, like the mental stimulation that goes along with the trick, and with that mental stimulation comes a more intelligent dog. We will be highlighting two fun and easy ticks.
1. Weaving Your Legs:
In the beginning you’re going to want to get your dog use to following the lure through your legs. Get out your high value food reward and guide him on through. Do lots of repetition of this until he is doing it very smoothly. Once he is doing it very smoothly it’s time to try to get him to do it with just using a hand motion. Make this hand motion look the same as when you had the food. Do lots of practice with that. Once he is doing that really well you can start to add in the word. I’ve chosen the word, “through.” Check out the video below to get a visual of how I teach this.
2. Spinning Left and Right.
With this you’ll continue with the same trend. You’ll want to get a treat out and start to guide your dog in circles. Once the circle is complete, give the treat. Practice having your dog go to the left, and the right. Once he is doing very well with following the treat, use just a hand signal in a similar fashion as you did with the treat. After a lot of repetition with that, you can start adding in the words to cue him to go left or right. Here is a video demonstrating how I teach this.
After practicing these enough you’ll have some cool party tricks to show off! Remember to stay patient and work at your dog’s pace. If he is struggling with something, take a “step back” and make it easier.

The Most Popular Pet Names in 2014

The Most Popular Pet Names in 2014

petnames
For the third straight year, “Bella” reigns as the most common name among both dogs and cats in 2014. “Bailey” was a close second in the dog category and “Max” was once again the feline runner up. The exotic pet category, which includes birds, rodents and reptiles, revealed a new top name with “Coco” leading the pack. Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI), the nation’s first and largest provider of pet health insurance, sorted its database of more than 500,000 insured pets to determine the most popular pet names of 2014. Following are the top 10 most common monikers for dogs, cats and exotic pets:
Dogs
Cats
Exotic Pets
1. Bella
1. Bella
1. Coco
2. Bailey
2. Max
2. Mango
3. Max
3. Chloe
3. Thumper
4. Lucy
4. Oliver
4. Bella
5. Molly
5. Lucy
5. Kiwi
6. Charlie
6. Charlie

7. Daisy
7. Lily
7. Oreo
8. Buddy
8. Sophie
8. Sunny
9. Maggie
9. Tiger
9. Gizmo
10. Sophie
10. Shadow
10. Peanut
While 2014′s top dog and cat names remained similar to last year, there was an emergence of new trends within the top 100 monikers. A significant surge of vehicle-related monikers has emerged, such as “Bentley” and “Cooper” among male dog names. Other vehicle-related names with an increase in volume included “Harley,” “Diesel,” “Chevy,” and “Porsche.” The cat category had a sharp increase in the name “Luna,” which despite falling just short of the top ten, showed significant popularity compared to years past. Trends among exotic pet names changed considerably in 2014 with five of the top ten names being food related.
“Although people names have been popular among pet owners recently, new trends emerge every few years,” said Curtis Steinhoff, Director of Communications for Veterinary Pet Insurance. “Popularity in pet names can be affected by various factors in pop culture such as movies, characters, actors, cars, etc. We’ve seen this with the prevalence of ‘Bella’ in female dog names after the popularity of the Twilight movies and now we’re seeing evidence of new trends arising.”
Despite these monikers being the most popular, many pet lovers choose less conventional names for their companions such as “Zippity Do Dawg” and “Felix Thunder Paws.” To view some of the more creative monikers selected for VPI’s Top 10 Most Unusual Pet Names of 2014, visit www.wackypetnames.com.

Why Do Dogs Kick When You Scratch Their Belly?

Why Do Dogs Kick When You Scratch Their Belly?

kickleg
If you’ve got a dog that loves belly rubs, as many of us do, than you’ve no doubt found “the sweet spot” that gets his leg kicking. This usually happens when you scratch him in his saddle region – the belly, sides, and parts of the dog’s back. The exact spot varies depending on the dog. Some dogs have several spots that get their legs moving.
This silly behavior got us wondering, why do dogs kick their legs when you scratch their belly?
Animal Planet offers this explanation:
Dogs shake or kick their legs when you scratch them because of something known as the scratch reflex. It’s a completely involuntary reaction, which explains why your dog may look as puzzled as you do when it starts to happen. When you scratch or tickle your dog’s belly, it irritates him, much the same way that the wind or a bug might. It activates nerves under his skin that are connected to his spinal cord and relays a message to his leg muscles to kick in an attempt to get rid of the irritant. Of course, you’re the one both providing the “itch” and “scratching” it, so it’s a completely pointless act.
Turns out, by causing the kick, you’re actually kind of irritating your dog (who knew!?). So, if making your dog feel blissful and happy is what you’re going for, just move to another spot that doesn’t cause the kick.
The scratch reflex isn’t just a funny party trick for your dog, either. In fact, veterinarians can use the spot to identify nerve damage or neurological problems. The belly rub kick can be compared to the knee-jerk that humans do when the doctor taps just below your knee with a hammer, or how cats automatically raise their bottoms when you scratch the base of their tail.
Still, a lot of dogs realllllly love having their bellies rubbed, so if your dog is one of them – keep it up!
Does your dog love belly rubs? Does he kick his legs when you scratch him?

Paws and Claus Photo Sessions— a one-of-a-kind opportunity for your dogs to come out and get special photos taken with Santa!
These OUTDOOR pet Christmas themed photo sessions with Santa will take place on Dec. 14, 2014 at Erwin Park in McKinney.
Here are some of the highlights:
▪ 15- 20 minute photo shoot with me, complete with all sort of holiday decor and special touches. We’ll have plenty of time to get your dog comfortable and to capture his or her personality!
*Outdoors, natural setting.
This is not a cookie cutter experience indoors with a backdrop. That is great for some, but is just not my thing! I love working outdoors and creating a variety of shots. So that’s what I am doing!
*Authentic Santa experience. To make it even more special, the package will include a STOCKING from Santa with doggie goodies!
*Expect around 10-15 photos to choose from in the online gallery, after the event. Package includes two 5x7s, you pick the image.
(Also, these two images, along with any others purchased, will also be provided as complimentary web-optimized digitals so you can share and enjoy!)
dfwpetchristmasjennareganphotography
*You are welcome to add on any products I offer later when you see all the awesome photos! I will have some special products for the holidays such as ornaments, dog themed holiday cards made from your dog’s photo, mugs, and more. (You can see samples on the day of the Paws and Claus event.)
*Posed and natural shots! I have so many fun ideas… Imagine your dog getting a belly rub from Santa ;)
(I am keeping the shots a secret for now, but rest assured these will be fun and one of a kind!)
You are welcome to bring your favorite holiday outfits and toys too!
The cost is $105 and that includes all of the above for two dogs. If you have more dogs, no problem! Just let me know.
